Campanula ‘Sarastro’ is a fantastic hardy perennial for adding rich, long-lasting colour to summer borders. It forms sturdy clumps of leafy growth topped with large, deep violet-blue bell-shaped flowers that appear over a long period in summer. The blooms are bold, showy and brilliant for pollinators, and the strong stems make ‘Sarastro’ a great choice for borders where you want reliable height without flopping. It also makes a lovely cut flower, bringing that classic cottage-garden feel indoors.

Supplied as a bare root plant, it’s an easy, great-value way to establish a strong perennial that will return year after year and gradually form a bigger clump.

Planting Instructions

When to Plant:

Plant bare root Campanula in autumn or early spring while the plant is dormant. Avoid planting when the ground is frozen or waterlogged.

Where to Plant:
Choose a spot in sun or partial shade with moist, well-drained soil. Campanula ‘Sarastro’ is ideal for mixed borders, cottage gardens and wildlife-friendly planting. It performs best in soil that doesn’t dry out completely in summer.

How to Plant:

  • Depth: Plant so the crown sits level with the soil surface, with roots spread out in the planting hole.
  • Spacing: Space 35–45 cm (14–18 inches) apart to allow clumps to develop.
  • Soil Prep: Mix in well-rotted compost to improve soil structure and help retain moisture.

Watering:
Water well after planting. Keep the soil evenly moist while the plant establishes, especially in the first growing season. Water during dry spells for best flowering.

Aftercare Tips:

  • Deadhead spent flowers to encourage repeat blooming and keep plants tidy.
  • Cut back flowering stems after the main flush to promote fresh growth.
  • Mulch in spring to conserve moisture and support strong growth.
  • Divide clumps every 3–5 years in spring or autumn to maintain vigour.

Top Tip:
Campanula ‘Sarastro’ looks stunning planted in groups. Pair it with Roses, Salvias, Geraniums and ornamental grasses for an easy cottage-garden mix and plenty of pollinator appeal.
