Centranthus ruber is one of those wonderfully easy, long-flowering perennials that seems to thrive on neglect (in the nicest way!). It produces airy clusters of small, starry flowers held on tall stems above blue-green foliage, creating a soft, relaxed “cottage garden” look. It’s brilliant for filling gaps in borders, softening paths and walls, and it’s especially happy in poor, free-draining soil—making it a favourite for gravel gardens and sunny, dry areas where many plants struggle.

It’s also a magnet for bees and butterflies, and once established it’s impressively drought tolerant. Centranthus often self-seeds gently too, meaning you can get extra plants popping up in all the right places (and if you don’t want that, a quick deadhead keeps it under control). A great-value, hardworking plant that brings colour for months.

Planting Instructions

When to Plant:

Plant in spring or autumn, while the soil is moist and workable. Container-grown plants can be planted at most times of year, avoiding frozen or waterlogged conditions.

Where to Plant:
Choose a sunny position with well-drained soil. Centranthus ruber thrives in poor, stony or chalky soils and is drought tolerant once established. Ideal for cottage gardens, gravel gardens, dry borders, and wall-side planting.

How to Plant:

  • Depth: Plant at the same depth as in the pot, with the crown level with the soil surface.
  • Spacing: Space 40–50 cm (16–20 inches) apart to allow plants to bush out.
  • Soil Prep: Little enrichment is needed—avoid overly rich soil which can encourage leafy growth at the expense of flowers. In heavy soil, add grit to improve drainage.

Watering:
Water well after planting. Once established, Centranthus is low-maintenance and needs only occasional watering during prolonged dry spells.

Aftercare Tips:

  • Deadhead regularly to encourage repeat flowering and reduce self-seeding.
  • After the main flush, cut stems back to promote fresh growth and more blooms.
  • In spring, cut back any tired growth to keep the plant compact.
  • Divide clumps every 3–4 years if needed to maintain vigour.

Top Tip:
Centranthus ruber is perfect for “tough” spots. Plant it in a sunny, free-draining area and it will reward you with months of flower and plenty of pollinator activity.
