Crocosmia ‘Harlequin’ is a wonderfully lively variety that brings a playful mix of colour to the late-summer border. It produces sprays of tubular flowers in warm, glowing shades—often a blend of yellow, apricot and orange that can deepen as the blooms mature. The flowers are carried on arching stems above neat, sword-like foliage, adding movement and that relaxed, cottage-garden feel from mid to late summer.

It’s a brilliant plant for pollinators, particularly bees, and it also makes a great cut flower for bright, sunny arrangements. Once established, Crocosmia forms clumps that return year after year and gradually increase, giving you an even bigger display over time.

Planting Instructions

When to Plant:

Plant Crocosmia corms in spring once the soil starts to warm. Avoid planting into frozen or waterlogged ground.

Where to Plant:
Choose a position in full sun or partial shade with well-drained soil. Crocosmia is ideal for mixed borders, cottage gardens and wildlife-friendly planting. In cooler or exposed areas, a warm, sheltered spot helps it perform at its best.

How to Plant:

  • Depth: Plant corms about 8–10 cm (3–4 inches) deep.
  • Spacing: Space corms 10–15 cm (4–6 inches) apart. Plant in groups for the best display.
  • Soil Prep: Improve soil with a little compost. In heavy soil, add grit to improve drainage.

Watering:
Water after planting and keep lightly moist while shoots appear. Once growing, Crocosmia is fairly tolerant, but will flower best with water during prolonged dry spells.

Aftercare Tips:

  • Deadhead spent blooms to keep plants tidy.
  • Leave foliage in place after flowering until it yellows naturally—this feeds the corms for next year.
  • In autumn, mulch clumps in colder areas for winter protection.
  • Divide congested clumps every 3–4 years in spring to maintain vigour.

Top Tip:
Crocosmia ‘Harlequin’ is perfect for adding warmth without being too bold. Try weaving it through grasses, Achilleas or Rudbeckias for a sunny, late-summer border with lots of movement.
