Iris ‘Golden Harvest’ is a real ray of sunshine for the early summer garden, producing generous blooms in warm, glowing golden-yellow tones that stand out beautifully against its fresh, sword-like foliage. A classic bearded iris (Iris germanica), it’s loved for its bold, architectural shape and ruffled petals, and it brings that instantly “cottage garden” feel to borders—while still looking right at home in more modern planting schemes too.

Bearded irises are wonderfully rewarding plants: once established they’re tough, drought tolerant, and can flower year after year with very little fuss. They’re also fantastic for pollinators, providing an important nectar source in late spring and early summer. Plant ‘Golden Harvest’ somewhere sunny and well-drained and you’ll be rewarded with strong stems, vibrant colour, and a reliable return performance—plus those handsome fans of foliage that add structure even when the flowers have finished.

Fun fact: Bearded irises get their name from the soft, fuzzy “beard” on the falls (the lower petals), which helps guide pollinators towards the nectar.

Planting Instructions

When to Plant:

Plant bare root iris rhizomes in late summer to early autumn for best results, or in spring if needed, when the soil is workable and not frozen or waterlogged.

Where to Plant:
Choose a sunny position with free-draining soil. Bearded irises thrive in warmth and dislike sitting wet, especially in winter. Ideal for mixed borders, gravel gardens, or the front of sunny beds where the flowers and foliage can be enjoyed up close.

How to Plant:

  • Depth: Plant rhizomes so the top is just visible at the soil surface (or only lightly covered). Deep planting can reduce flowering.
  • Spacing: Space 30–40 cm (12–16 inches) apart to allow plants to bulk up and for good airflow.
  • Soil Prep: Improve heavy soils with grit or sharp sand for drainage. Avoid rich manure directly under the rhizome.

Watering:
Water in after planting, then water only when dry while establishing. Once settled, bearded irises are drought tolerant and prefer drier conditions over soggy soil.

Aftercare Tips:

  • Remove spent flower stems after blooming to keep plants tidy.
  • In late summer, trim foliage to around 10–15 cm if it becomes tatty.
  • Divide clumps every 3–4 years to maintain vigour and flowering—replant the healthiest outer rhizomes.
  • Keep rhizomes exposed to sun and avoid heavy mulching over the crown.

Top Tip:
For the best flowers, plant Iris ‘Golden Harvest’ where the rhizomes can bake in the sun. Pair with Salvias, Nepeta, Alliums or ornamental grasses for a long season of colour and texture.
