Iris ‘Picasso’ is a real show-stopper bearded iris, producing wonderfully ruffled blooms in a striking mix of creamy ivory and soft buttery-yellow, beautifully washed and edged with rich violet-purple. Each flower looks hand-painted (hence the name), and the tall, elegant stems rise above sword-like grey-green foliage to bring instant structure and drama to the late spring and early summer garden.

Bearded irises are famously long-lived and, once settled, will reward you with bigger clumps and even more flowers year after year. They’re also brilliant for low-maintenance, sunny planting—perfect for borders, gravel gardens and hot, dry spots where many other perennials struggle. As a bonus, the blooms are excellent for cutting, and many irises carry a light, sweet fragrance that makes them even more irresistible up close.

Planting Instructions

When to Plant:

Plant Iris rhizomes in late summer to early autumn for best establishment, or in spring if needed, when the soil is workable. Avoid planting during very cold, wet periods.

Where to Plant:
Choose a sunny position with free-draining soil. Bearded irises love warmth and dislike winter wet. They’re ideal for sunny borders, gravel gardens, raised beds, or sloping sites where water drains away easily.

How to Plant:

  • Depth: Plant so the rhizome sits just at the soil surface (or only lightly covered). The top of the rhizome should be able to bask in the sun.
  • Spacing: Space 30–45 cm (12–18 inches) apart to allow good air circulation and room for clumps to expand.
  • Soil Prep: Improve heavy soil with grit or sand to aid drainage. Avoid fresh manure or overly rich soil, which can encourage soft growth and rot.

Watering:
Water in after planting, then keep watering light. Once established, bearded irises are drought tolerant and only need watering during prolonged dry spells.

Aftercare Tips:

  • Remove spent flower stems once flowering finishes to keep plants tidy.
  • In late summer or autumn, remove old or tired outer leaves to improve airflow and reduce disease.
  • Divide overcrowded clumps every 3–4 years to maintain strong flowering (best done after flowering, late summer).
