Phlox ‘David’ is a true summer classic—loved for its large heads of pure white, beautifully fragrant flowers that bloom for weeks and bring a fresh, bright lift to borders. It’s also well known for its excellent resistance to powdery mildew, making it a brilliant choice if you want that traditional phlox look without the usual worries. A real pollinator magnet, ‘David’ is perfect for bees and butterflies, and it makes a wonderful cut flower too—ideal for adding scent and softness indoors as well as out.

This is a hardy, long-lived perennial that forms a sturdy clump and works beautifully in cottage gardens, mixed borders and wildlife-friendly planting. Plant it in groups for the best impact and to create a “cloud” of white through midsummer.

Planting Instructions

When to Plant:

Plant in spring or autumn, while the soil is moist and workable. Container-grown plants can be planted most of the year, avoiding periods when the ground is frozen or waterlogged.

Where to Plant:
Choose a position in full sun or light/partial shade with fertile, moisture-retentive but well-drained soil. Phlox performs best with steady moisture and good airflow. Ideal for mixed borders, cottage gardens, and wildlife-friendly planting.

How to Plant:

  • Depth: Plant so the top of the rootball is level with the soil surface.
  • Spacing: Space 45–60 cm (18–24 inches) apart to allow good air circulation.
  • Soil Prep: Improve the planting hole with garden compost or well-rotted organic matter for best flowering.

Watering:
Water well after planting. Keep the soil evenly moist while establishing. Once established, water during prolonged dry spells—especially in summer when in bud and flower.

Aftercare Tips:

  • Deadhead spent flower heads to encourage further blooms.
  • In spring, pinch back a few shoots for a slightly bushier plant and more flowers.
  • Divide clumps every 3–4 years in spring or autumn to maintain vigour.
  • Water at the base of the plant to help reduce mildew risk and keep foliage dry.

Top Tip:
Phlox ‘David’ is perfect for brightening borders and looks stunning with Salvias, Echinacea, Rudbeckia and ornamental grasses. Plant in drifts for a real cottage-garden feel and maximum pollinator value.
