Phlox ‘Orchid Yellow’ is a real conversation-starter in the summer border, producing dense, hydrangea-like heads of flowers in a striking two-tone mix—typically hot pink blooms with lime-green to yellow edging for a bright, modern twist on a cottage-garden classic. It’s also known for a sweet, subtle fragrance, and the nectar-rich flowers are a brilliant draw for bees and butterflies.

Bare root plants are a great value way to get phlox established, and once settled they’ll return each year with stronger clumps and even more flower. Expect it to reach around 70cm tall with a spread of roughly 50cm, making it ideal for the front-to-middle of borders.

Planting Instructions

When to Plant:

Plant bare root phlox in autumn to spring while dormant, when the soil is moist and workable. Avoid planting when the ground is frozen or waterlogged.

Where to Plant:
Choose a position in full sun or partial shade with fertile, moist but well-drained soil. Phlox performs best with consistent moisture and good airflow. Ideal for mixed borders, cottage gardens, wildlife-friendly planting, and cutting gardens.

How to Plant:

  • Depth: Plant so the crown (growing point) sits just below the soil surface and roots are spread out naturally.
  • Spacing: Space 45–50 cm (18–20 inches) apart to allow good air circulation.
  • Soil Prep: Mix in garden compost to improve moisture-holding and structure, especially on lighter soils.

Watering:
Water well after planting. Keep the soil evenly moist during the first growing season and water during dry spells. Avoid letting plants dry out in summer, as drought stress can reduce flowering and encourage mildew.

Aftercare Tips:

  • Deadhead spent blooms to encourage a longer flowering period.
  • Apply a mulch of well-rotted compost in spring to feed and re
