Rhodohypoxis ‘Pintado’ is a charming, compact alpine that produces a neat tuft of fine, grassy foliage topped with masses of starry flowers in soft pink tones, often with a pretty darker eye that gives each bloom extra detail. It’s a brilliant choice for anyone wanting long-lasting colour in a small space—ideal for pots, troughs, rockeries and gravel gardens, where you can enjoy the flowers up close.
Like other Rhodohypoxis, it’s a tuberous/corm-forming perennial that dies back in winter and returns in spring. The secret to success is sun and sharp drainage, plus protecting it from winter wet—which is why it’s often happiest in a container.
When to Plant:
Plant in spring once the risk of hard frost has passed, or in early autumn in milder areas. Avoid planting when the ground is frozen or waterlogged.
Where to Plant:
Choose a
sunny position with very well-drained, gritty soil. Rhodohypoxis is ideal for pots and troughs, rockeries and gravel gardens. It dislikes winter wet, so container growing is often the easiest option.
How to Plant:
Watering:
Water well after planting. During growth and flowering, keep the compost
evenly moist (not soggy). Once it finishes flowering and starts to die back, reduce watering.
Aftercare Tips:
Top Tip:
For reliable results, grow Rhodohypoxis ‘Pintado’ in a pot and
plunge the pot into the border for summer, then lift it for winter protection. This keeps the tubers safe from cold, wet soil.
Flowering Period:
May – September (often longest in pots with regular deadheading)
Height:
10–15cm
Position:
Full sun
Hardy Perennial (best protected from winter wet)
