Trollius ‘Superbus’ is a classic for moist borders and cooler spots, producing charming, rounded lemon-yellow, globe-like flowers held on sturdy stems above deeply cut, fresh green foliage. It’s a brilliant plant for adding early-season colour and structure, and it sits beautifully alongside other moisture-lovers such as primulas, hostas, astilbes and ferns. ‘Superbus’ is also a lovely option for cut flowers, bringing a soft, woodland-meadow feel indoors.

Planting Instructions

When to Plant:

Plant in spring or autumn, while the soil is moist and workable (avoid frozen or waterlogged ground).

Where to Plant:
Choose a position in full sun or partial shade with moisture-retentive soil. Trollius thrives where soil stays reliably damp, making it ideal for moist borders, woodland edges, or near ponds and streams.

How to Plant:

  • Depth: Plant so the crown is level with the soil surface.
  • Spacing: Space plants 30–45 cm apart to allow clumps to develop.
  • Soil Prep: Improve the planting area with plenty of well-rotted compost or leaf mould to help hold moisture.

Watering:
Water well after planting and keep the soil consistently moist, especially in the first growing season and during dry spells.

Aftercare Tips:

  • Deadhead spent blooms to extend the display.
  • If foliage looks tired as summer progresses, you can cut it back to encourage fresh, tidy regrowth.
  • Mulch in spring to conserve moisture and improve soil structure.
  • Divide clumps every few years if needed to maintain vigour.

Top Tip:
Trollius loves “cool roots”—mulch well and don’t let it dry out. Plant in groups for the best impact, so the lemon-yellow globes glow through late spring and early summer.
