Lupin ‘Legendary Red’ brings bold, vibrant colour to the garden with tall, upright spires packed with rich red, pea-like flowers held above a clump of fresh green, hand-shaped foliage. It’s a classic cottage-garden favourite that adds instant height and drama to borders, and it looks especially striking when planted in groups or mixed with softer shades for contrast. Loved by bees and other pollinators, lupins are also great for cutting—one or two stems in a vase makes a real statement.

Like other lupins, ‘Legendary Red’ can often give a second flush of flowers if you deadhead promptly, and it’s a brilliant choice for anyone wanting big impact with straightforward care.

Planting Instructions

When to Plant:

Plant in spring or autumn, while the soil is moist and workable. Container-grown plants can be planted most of the year, avoiding periods when the ground is frozen or waterlogged.

Where to Plant:
Choose a position in full sun (best flowering) or light/partial shade with well-drained soil. Lupins prefer soil that is not waterlogged in winter. Ideal for mixed borders, cottage gardens, and cutting gardens.

How to Plant:

  • Depth: Plant so the top of the rootball is level with the soil surface.
  • Spacing: Space 45–60 cm (18–24 inches) apart to allow good airflow and sturdy growth.
  • Soil Prep: Improve the planting hole with a little garden compost if soil is very light, but avoid over-feeding as it can encourage leafy growth at the expense of flowers.

Watering:
Water well after planting. Keep the soil evenly moist while the plant establishes. Once settled, water during prolonged dry spells, especially when in bud and flower.

Aftercare Tips:

  • Deadhead flower spikes as they fade to encourage a second flush and to stop the plant putting energy into seed.
  • In exposed areas, use a discreet stake if needed as stems get taller.
  • Cut back finished flower stems to a strong leaf in summer; in autumn, tidy up as foliage fades.
  • Watch for slugs and snails on young shoots in spring.

Top Tip:
Lupin ‘Legendary Red’ looks amazing alongside roses, foxgloves, Achillea and ornamental grasses. For a longer season, keep deadheading and give a deep water during dry spells.
