Striking, elegant and wonderfully free flowering, Allium ‘Purple Rain’ produces large rounded flower heads of rich violet-purple blooms held high on strong upright stems.

This impressive ornamental allium combines the bold architectural presence of larger alliums with a softer, more natural flowering habit, making it especially effective in modern naturalistic planting schemes. The flower heads appear in abundance during late spring and early summer, floating gracefully above surrounding perennials and ornamental grasses.

Bred as a hybrid between some of the finest ornamental allium species, ‘Purple Rain’ is prized for its excellent garden performance, sturdy stems and exceptionally long-lasting flowers. The vibrant purple blooms are highly attractive to bees and pollinators, while the decorative seed heads continue to provide structure and interest long after flowering has finished.

Perfect for sunny borders, prairie-style planting, gravel gardens and cottage garden schemes, this easy-to-grow variety brings colour, height and movement to the garden with very little maintenance.

Plant in generous drifts for a spectacular early summer display.

Planting Instructions

When to Plant:

Plant Allium bulbs in autumn (September–November) before the ground freezes. This allows roots to establish for strong flowering the following season.

Where to Plant:
Choose a sunny position with well-drained soil. Alliums are ideal for borders, gravel gardens and naturalistic planting schemes. Avoid areas where soil remains wet over winter.

How to Plant:

  • Depth: Plant bulbs about 12–15 cm (5–6 inches) deep.
  • Spacing: Space bulbs about 15–20 cm (6–8 inches) apart.
  • Soil Prep: Improve soil with compost. In heavier soils, add grit or sharp sand to improve drainage.

Watering:
Water after planting. Once established, Alliums require very little additional watering unless conditions are particularly dry.

Aftercare Tips:

  • Allow foliage to die back naturally after flowering to feed the bulb.
  • Leave seed heads standing for long-lasting ornamental interest.
  • Avoid excessive moisture in winter to prevent bulb rot.

Top Tip:
Plant amongst ornamental grasses or flowing perennials for a relaxed, naturalistic display where the purple flower heads appear to float above the border.
