Graceful, natural and steeped in history, Camassia quamash produces elegant spikes of star-shaped violet-blue flowers that bring a wonderful sense of movement and colour to the late spring garden.

Often known as the Common Camas, this beautiful North American wildflower has been cultivated for centuries and was once an important food source for many Native American peoples. Today it is prized by gardeners for its natural beauty, reliability and ability to thrive in a wide range of garden conditions.

The flower spikes rise above attractive strap-like foliage, with each stem carrying numerous blooms that open progressively from the bottom upwards. The result is a long-lasting display that provides valuable nectar for bees and other pollinating insects at a time when many spring bulbs are beginning to fade.

Smaller and more delicate than some of the larger Camassia species, Camassia quamash is ideal for naturalising in grass, meadow-style planting, cottage gardens and mixed perennial borders. Given time, it will form attractive clumps that return reliably year after year.

A superb choice for gardeners seeking a naturalistic and wildlife-friendly spring display.

Planting Instructions

When to Plant:

Plant Camassia bulbs in autumn, ideally between September and November, while the soil remains warm and workable.

Where to Plant:
Choose a position in full sun or partial shade with fertile, moisture-retentive but well-drained soil. Camassias are ideal for borders, meadows, wildflower planting and areas that remain moist during spring.

How to Plant:

  • Depth: Plant bulbs approximately 8–10 cm (3–4 inches) deep.
  • Spacing: Space bulbs about 10–15 cm (4–6 inches) apart.
  • Soil Prep: Improve soil with compost or well-rotted organic matter before planting to improve fertility and moisture retention.

Watering:
Water after planting and during prolonged dry spells in spring. Camassias appreciate moisture while actively growing and flowering.

Aftercare Tips:

  • Allow foliage to die back naturally after flowering.
  • Apply a mulch of compost or organic matter each autumn.
  • Leave established clumps undisturbed where possible, as they improve with age.

Top Tip:
Plant among ornamental grasses or allow to naturalise in rough grass for a beautiful meadow-like effect in late spring.
