Delivered to you from September
We have been growing and selecting a number of Camassia leichtlinii (crossed initially with varieties such as C. John Treasure) with the intention of raising different colour strains for many years. On the way we have produced a bed of plants of variable colours which are by-products of that process in shades of purple, blue, mauve, greyish, purplish, green, cream and pale pink. The bulbs are often smaller and sometimes irregularly shaped, the flower colours on the bulbs that we sell will vary and it is 'pot luck' as to what you receive. Many customers have reported finding excellent forms in their selections. Camassia leichtinii grows principally in mountain meadows of the western USA and prefers fairly full sun, although it tolerates partial shade fairly well. They are excellent in heavy clay soils. The flowers are good for cutting, though beware the falling petals staining a white table cloth. Seedlings raised from this selection will themselves vary widely in colour.
Camassia leichtlinii Avon''s Stellar Hybrids bulbs should be planted 4-6" (10-15cm) deep and 9" (22cm) apart in any reasonably well-drained soil in groups of 5 or more. They like a moist spring and flowering, followed by a dry dormancy. Let the leaves start to lose colour before cutting them back. They prefer not to be disturbed once established.
