Rich, luxurious and wonderfully dramatic, Hippeastrum 'Benfica' is one of the deepest red Amaryllis varieties available, producing enormous velvety blooms in intense burgundy-red with a subtle satin sheen. Its opulent colouring and elegant trumpet-shaped flowers make it a true showstopper throughout the winter months.

Named after the famous Portuguese city, 'Benfica' has become a favourite among gardeners and florists for its bold colour, exceptional flower size and long-lasting display. The striking blooms, often reaching 20cm (8 inches) across, are carried on sturdy stems above glossy green foliage, creating an unforgettable indoor feature.

Each premium bulb typically produces two strong flowering stems, each bearing three to five magnificent flowers, ensuring weeks of spectacular colour from a single bulb. The deep crimson blooms make a stunning festive centrepiece and pair beautifully with gold, silver or white seasonal decorations.

Easy to grow and rewarding for gardeners of all abilities, Hippeastrum 'Benfica' brings elegance, warmth and sophistication to any room and makes an impressive gift during the festive season.

Planting Instructions

When to Plant:

Plant Hippeastrum bulbs indoors from October through to February for spectacular flowers throughout winter and early spring. Most bulbs flower approximately 6–10 weeks after planting.

Where to Plant:
Choose a bright, warm location, such as a sunny windowsill or conservatory, where temperatures remain between 18–22°C. Hippeastrums should always be grown indoors and protected from frost.

How to Plant:

  • Pot Size: Select a pot only slightly larger than the bulb, leaving approximately 2–3 cm around the sides.
  • Depth: Plant with the top third of the bulb above the compost surface.
  • Compost: Use a high-quality, free-draining compost and ensure the pot has drainage holes.

Watering:
Water lightly after planting, then wait until new shoots appear before watering again. Once growth begins, water regularly to keep the compost lightly moist, but never allow the bulb to sit in water.

Aftercare Tips:

  • Turn the pot every few days to encourage straight flower stems.
  • Feed weekly with a balanced liquid fertiliser once the leaves begin to develop.
  • Remove spent flowers after blooming but leave the foliage to grow naturally, allowing the bulb to build energy for next year's display.
  • Reduce watering in late summer and allow the bulb to rest for 8–10 weeks before restarting the growing cycle.

Top Tip:
For a truly luxurious display, plant 'Benfica' in a simple black, silver or gold container where its deep velvet-red blooms can take centre stage.
