Enchants with its warm apricot-salmon blooms, delicately flushed with coral and honey tones. This richly scented variety adds a sunset glow to spring borders, containers, and window boxes. A favourite since the early 1900s, it brings both vintage charm and bold colour to the garden. Plant in full sun or dappled shade. Ideal for beds, pots, or forcing indoors. Gypsy Queen thrives best in sheltered spots, where its fragrance and colour can be fully appreciated.

Planting Instructions

When to Plant:

Plant bulbs in autumn, ideally from September to November, before the first hard frosts.

Where to Plant:
Choose a sunny or lightly shaded spot with well-drained soil. Perfect for flower beds, borders, containers, or even indoor forcing.

How to Plant Outdoors:

  • Depth: Plant bulbs around 10–15cm (4–6 inches) deep.
  • Spacing: Allow about 10-12cm (4–6 inches) between each bulb.
  • Position: Place the bulb pointed-end up in the hole and cover with soil, firming gently.
  • Watering: Water well after planting to settle the soil.

For Pots and Containers:
Use a free-draining compost mix. Plant with the tips just below the surface and space bulbs slightly closer together than in the ground. Ensure good drainage to prevent rot.

For Indoor Forcing:
Plant in bowls with bulb fibre, leaving just the tips exposed. Chill in a cool, dark place (around 9°C) for 10–12 weeks, then bring gradually into warmth and light to encourage flowering indoors.

Aftercare:
Allow the leaves to die back naturally after flowering to feed the bulb for the next year. You can lift and store bulbs once foliage has yellowed or leave them in situ in well-drained soil.

Top Tip:
For best fragrance and impact, plant in groups of 5 or more. ‘Gypsy Queen’ produces beautiful apricot-salmon flowers and is a standout in spring displays.
