Richly coloured, intensely fragrant and wonderfully dramatic, Hyacinthus 'Woodstock' is one of the finest deep purple hyacinths, producing dense flower spikes in sumptuous shades of plum, burgundy and wine-purple.

Introduced in the 1920s, 'Woodstock' has become a firm favourite for its exceptional colour and powerful fragrance. The tightly packed flower heads are composed of dozens of waxy, star-shaped florets that release the unmistakable sweet perfume for which hyacinths are renowned, filling the garden with scent throughout spring.

Its luxurious colouring provides a striking contrast to white, cream and soft pink spring bulbs, while pairing beautifully with tulips, narcissus and muscari. Whether planted in borders, containers or decorative pots, 'Woodstock' creates an elegant focal point and also makes a superb cut flower for indoor arrangements.

Easy to grow and highly reliable, this classic variety is equally suitable for outdoor displays or indoor forcing, bringing rich colour and glorious fragrance wherever it is planted.

A magnificent hyacinth that combines bold colour, outstanding perfume and timeless elegance.

Planting Instructions

When to Plant:

Plant Hyacinth bulbs in autumn, ideally between September and November, before the ground freezes.

Where to Plant:
Choose a position in full sun or partial shade with fertile, well-drained soil. Hyacinths are excellent for borders, containers, patio pots and can also be grown indoors for winter flowering.

How to Plant:

  • Depth: Plant bulbs approximately 10–15 cm (4–6 inches) deep.
  • Spacing: Space bulbs about 10–15 cm (4–6 inches) apart.
  • Soil Prep: Improve the soil with compost or well-rotted organic matter. In heavy soils, add grit to improve drainage.

Watering:
Water thoroughly after planting to settle the soil. During active growth, keep the soil lightly moist but never waterlogged.

Aftercare Tips:

  • Remove faded flower spikes once flowering has finished.
  • Allow the foliage to die back naturally, as this feeds the bulb for the following year's flowers.
  • Apply a balanced fertiliser after flowering to encourage strong bulbs.

Top Tip:
Plant 'Woodstock' with white hyacinths such as 'Carnegie' or pale pink tulips for a striking contrast that really shows off its rich, velvety colouring.
