A jewel of early spring, captivating the eye with her rich violet blooms and delicate, yellow-marked falls. This dwarf iris carries herself with elegance despite her petite stature, typically flowering in February or March when few others dare. A favourite among gardeners for containers, rockeries, or the front of sunny borders, ‘Pauline’ is both graceful and resilient, thriving best in well-drained soil and basking in full winter light. Her slender, sword-like foliage emerges just as the cold begins to retreat, offering a welcome preview of the floral abundance to come. Plant in generous clusters for a naturalised effect, and enjoy the pleasure of her striking colour and sweet, subtle fragrance—an early promise that spring is near.

Planting Instructions

When to Plant:
Plant bulbs in autumn, ideally between September and November, before the first hard frost.

Where to Plant:
Choose a sunny or lightly shaded spot with well-drained soil. These bulbs thrive in rockeries, raised beds, alpine troughs, or the front of borders. Also excellent for pots and containers.

How to Plant:

  • Depth: 8–10 cm (3–4 inches)
  • Spacing: 5–8 cm (2–3 inches) apart
  • Postion: Place the bulbs with the pointed end facing upwards.

After Planting:
Water well after planting to help settle the soil. In containers, ensure good drainage and avoid overwatering during the dormant period.

After Care:

Allow foliage to die back naturally so the bulbs can store energy for the next season. Avoid cutting the leaves too early. Bulbs may naturalise over time if left undisturbed.

Top Tip:
For a stunning effect, plant in groups of 10 or more. These small irises are best appreciated en masse, and their early flowers provide vital nectar for pollinators emerging from winter.
