Graceful, elegant and full of old-fashioned charm, Leucojum aestivum, commonly known as the Summer Snowflake, produces clusters of nodding, pure white, bell-shaped flowers delicately tipped with fresh green. Flowering in mid to late spring, it brings a refined beauty to borders, woodland gardens and damp areas where many other bulbs struggle.
Despite its common name, Summer Snowflake actually flowers in April and May, several weeks after the familiar Snowdrops, with which it is closely related. Each sturdy stem carries up to eight gently scented flowers that dance gracefully above rich green, strap-like foliage. Every petal is neatly marked with a tiny emerald-green spot at the tip, giving the flowers a beautifully finished appearance.
Native to meadows, riverbanks and damp woodland throughout Europe, Leucojum aestivum is particularly well suited to naturalising in moisture-retentive soils. It thrives around ponds, beside streams and beneath deciduous trees, where it gradually forms impressive colonies that return with increasing vigour each spring.
Awarded the RHS Award of Garden Merit, this long-lived, reliable bulb combines beautifully with Camassias, Narcissus, Primulas and ferns, bringing elegance and movement to both formal and naturalistic planting schemes.
A timeless perennial bulb that rewards gardeners with decades of effortless spring beauty.
