A truly eye-catching grape hyacinth, Muscari latifolium 'Grape Ice' combines dramatic two-tone flower spikes with distinctive broad foliage to create one of the most elegant spring displays. The striking contrast between rich violet-blue and brilliant ice-white flowers makes this an exceptional addition to borders, containers and naturalised plantings.

Derived from the Turkish species Muscari latifolium, this distinctive variety retains the species' characteristic single broad leaf while producing densely packed flower spikes with remarkable colour contrast. The lower half of each spike is filled with deep violet-blue fertile florets, while the upper sterile flowers mature to a crisp, ice-white crown. As the spikes first emerge, the upper buds often display a soft greenish tint before fading to their brilliant white, giving the flowers an ever-changing beauty as they develop.

Flowering in mid-spring, the lightly fragrant blooms provide an early source of nectar for bees and other pollinating insects. Compact yet vigorous, 'Grape Ice' is ideal for rockeries, woodland gardens, containers and the front of borders, where its unusual colouring and architectural flower spikes can be appreciated at close range. Left undisturbed, the bulbs naturalise readily, forming handsome clumps that become more impressive each year.

Beautiful planted alongside white tulips, miniature narcissus, blue anemones or darker Muscari varieties, 'Grape Ice' brings crisp contrast and sophisticated colour to spring planting schemes.

An outstanding modern grape hyacinth whose dramatic blue-and-white flower spikes make it one of the most distinctive Muscari available.

Planting Instructions

When to Plant:

Plant Muscari bulbs in autumn, ideally between September and November, while the soil is still warm enough for roots to establish before winter.

Where to Plant:
Choose a position in full sun or partial shade with fertile, well-drained soil. Muscari are ideal for borders, rockeries, woodland gardens, containers and beneath deciduous trees.

How to Plant:

  • Depth: Plant bulbs approximately 8–10 cm (3–4 inches) deep.
  • Spacing: Space bulbs about 5–8 cm (2–3 inches) apart.
  • Soil Prep: Improve heavy soils with grit or organic matter to ensure good drainage before planting.

Watering:
Water thoroughly after planting to settle the soil. Once established, Muscari require very little watering except during prolonged dry spells.

Aftercare Tips:

  • Allow the foliage to die back naturally after flowering to replenish the bulbs.
  • Leave bulbs undisturbed to naturalise and form attractive clumps.
  • Divide congested clumps every few years if flowering becomes less prolific.

Top Tip:
Plant alongside dark blue Muscari, white Narcissus or pale tulips to showcase the striking contrast between the deep violet-blue flowers and the brilliant ice-white crown.
