Graceful, beautifully fragrant and effortlessly elegant, Narcissus 'Sailboat' is one of the finest Jonquilla daffodils, producing clusters of delicate ivory-white flowers that appear to float above the foliage like tiny sails catching the spring breeze. Its refined beauty and sweet perfume make it an enduring favourite for gardens and cut flower arrangements alike.

Introduced in the 1960s, 'Sailboat' is celebrated for its graceful, multi-flowering habit. Each slender stem carries 2–5 exquisitely scented blooms, opening from soft creamy-yellow buds before maturing to pristine ivory-white petals surrounding a small, pale lemon cup that gradually fades almost to white. The gently reflexed petals give each flower an airy, wind-filled appearance, inspiring its evocative name.

Flowering during April and May, this charming variety thrives in borders, containers, gravel gardens and naturalised plantings. The sweet fragrance attracts bees and other early pollinating insects, while the long-lasting blooms make exceptional cut flowers, filling the home with their delightful scent.

Recipient of the prestigious RHS Award of Garden Merit, 'Sailboat' pairs beautifully with blue Camassias, Muscari, tulips and other late spring bulbs, adding elegance and fragrance to any planting scheme.

A refined heirloom daffodil whose graceful flowers and exquisite perfume bring timeless charm to the spring garden.

Planting Instructions

When to Plant:

Plant Narcissus bulbs in autumn, from September to November, while the soil remains warm enough for roots to establish before winter.

Where to Plant:
Choose a position in full sun or partial shade with fertile, well-drained soil. 'Sailboat' is ideal for borders, cottage gardens, containers, gravel gardens and naturalising beneath deciduous trees.

How to Plant:

  • Depth: Plant bulbs approximately 10–15 cm (4–6 inches) deep.
  • Spacing: Space bulbs about 10–15 cm (4–6 inches) apart.
  • Soil Prep: Improve heavy soils with compost and grit if necessary to ensure good drainage.

Watering:
Water thoroughly after planting to settle the soil. Once established, bulbs require very little watering except during prolonged dry spells.

Aftercare Tips:

  • Deadhead faded flowers to prevent seed production.
  • Allow the foliage to die back naturally for at least six weeks after flowering.
  • Apply a balanced fertiliser after flowering to encourage healthy bulbs for the following spring.

Top Tip:
Plant near paths, patios or entrances where the wonderfully sweet fragrance can be enjoyed every time you pass. The elegant blooms are also excellent for cutting.
