Narcissus Iwona

Delicate, compact and full of changing colour, Narcissus 'Iwona' is a charming miniature Cyclamineus daffodil with an unusual combination of crisp white and warm sunset shades. Its bright white petals sweep gracefully backwards from a beautifully frilled trumpet, giving the flowers the distinctive windswept appearance associated with this elegant group of Narcissus.

The real attraction is the colour-changing corona. Opening in warm yellow tones, the frilly cup gradually develops beautiful shades of peach, salmon and orange-pink as the flower matures. With flowers at different stages opening together, an established clump can display a delightful mixture of colours.

Sweetly fragrant and growing to only around 20–30cm, 'Iwona' is particularly suited to rock gardens, the front of borders, patio pots and containers, where its intricate flowers can be appreciated at close quarters. It can also be planted informally in grass and allowed to naturalise.

Flowering in early to mid-spring, this diminutive daffodil brings both fragrance and a welcome splash of colour just as the garden begins to awaken.

Planting Instructions

When to Plant:

Plant Narcissus 'Iwona' bulbs in autumn, ideally from September to November, while the soil is still workable. Planting early in autumn gives the bulbs plenty of time to develop roots before winter.

Where to Plant:
Choose a position in full sun or light partial shade with fertile, well-drained soil. Its compact habit makes 'Iwona' particularly suitable for rock gardens, the front of borders, patio containers and naturalising in grass.

How to Plant:

• Depth: Plant approximately 10–15cm (4–6 inches) deep, with the pointed end of the bulb facing upwards.
• Spacing: Space bulbs approximately 8–10cm (3–4 inches) apart.
• Soil Prep: Incorporate garden compost or well-rotted organic matter before planting. On heavier soils, add horticultural grit to improve drainage.
• Containers: Plant in a good-quality, free-draining compost and make sure the pot has adequate drainage holes.

Watering:
Water thoroughly after planting if the soil is dry. Bulbs planted in the ground will usually receive sufficient moisture from autumn and winter rainfall. Keep containers from drying out completely once growth begins in spring, but avoid waterlogging.

Aftercare Tips:

• Feed with a high-potash fertiliser as the foliage develops in spring.
• Remove faded flowers if desired, particularly in containers.
• Allow the foliage to yellow and die back naturally before removing it, as this replenishes the bulb for the following year's flowers.
• When naturalising in grass, avoid mowing until the foliage has yellowed and died back.
• Established clumps can be divided if flowering begins to become congested.

Top Tip:
Plant 'Iwona' somewhere its flowers can be enjoyed at close quarters. Its beautiful frilled cups gradually change from yellow through peach and salmon-pink, making it particularly effective beside paths or in patio pots.
