Graceful, fragrant and steeped in garden history, Polygonatum odoratum, commonly known as the Fragrant Solomon's Seal, is one of the most elegant woodland perennials you can grow. Native across Europe and Asia, this classic species has been cherished for centuries for its arching stems, refined foliage and sweetly scented, pendent flowers.

Each spring, slender, gently arching stems emerge bearing rows of fresh blue-green, oval leaves. Nestled beneath the foliage hang pairs of delicate, creamy-white tubular flowers, each tipped with soft green. Unlike many other Solomon's Seals, the blooms are delightfully fragrant, filling the garden with a subtle, sweet perfume during late spring. As summer progresses, the flowers are followed by attractive blue-black berries, providing additional seasonal interest.

Flowering from May to June, Polygonatum odoratum thrives in dappled woodland shade, beneath deciduous trees or in cool, humus-rich borders. It gradually forms elegant colonies over time, weaving naturally amongst ferns, Hostas, Epimediums, Trilliums and spring-flowering bulbs to create a tranquil woodland setting.

Recipient of the prestigious RHS Award of Garden Merit, this long-lived perennial is exceptionally hardy, easy to grow and requires very little maintenance once established.

A timeless woodland classic whose graceful form, fragrant flowers and elegant foliage bring beauty and tranquillity to shaded gardens year after year.

Planting Instructions

When to Plant:

Plant Polygonatum odoratum rhizomes in autumn or early spring, while the soil is cool, moist and easy to work.

Where to Plant:
Choose a position in partial shade or full shade with fertile, humus-rich, moisture-retentive but well-drained soil. It is ideal for woodland gardens, shaded borders and beneath deciduous trees.

How to Plant:

  • Depth: Plant rhizomes approximately 5–8 cm (2–3 inches) below the soil surface, with the growing buds facing upwards.
  • Spacing: Space plants 30–45 cm (12–18 inches) apart to allow graceful clumps to develop.
  • Soil Prep: Mix plenty of garden compost, leaf mould or well-rotted organic matter into the soil before planting to improve fertility and moisture retention.

Watering:
Water thoroughly after planting and keep the soil evenly moist during the first growing season. Once established, water during prolonged dry spells, particularly in late spring and summer.

Aftercare Tips:

  • Apply a mulch of compost or leaf mould each spring to retain moisture and enrich the soil.
  • Allow the foliage to die back naturally in autumn before removing old stems.
  • Leave established clumps undisturbed, where they will slowly spread and become increasingly impressive each year.

Top Tip:
Plant alongside Hostas, ferns, Brunnera, Epimediums and woodland bulbs for a beautiful layered display that offers interest from early spring through to summer.
