Elegant, architectural and wonderfully easy to grow, Polygonatum × hybridum, commonly known as Garden Solomon's Seal, is one of the most graceful woodland perennials for bringing structure and timeless beauty to shaded gardens.

Its gently arching stems carry rows of delicate, creamy-white, bell-shaped flowers beneath fresh green leaves during spring. The blooms appear to dangle like tiny porcelain lanterns, creating an understated elegance that has made Solomon's Seal a favourite in woodland gardens for centuries. After flowering, the blooms are often followed by attractive blue-black berries, extending the season of interest well into summer.

The name Solomon's Seal is thought to originate from the circular scars left on the rhizomes after each year's growth, said to resemble the seal of the biblical King Solomon. Native throughout Europe and parts of Asia, this long-lived perennial thrives in cool, humus-rich soils and slowly forms handsome clumps that become increasingly impressive with age.

Perfect beneath deciduous trees, amongst ferns, Hostas and other woodland favourites, Polygonatum × hybridum brings movement, texture and elegance to even the shadiest corners of the garden. It is also excellent as a long-lasting cut flower for natural floral arrangements.

A truly classic perennial that rewards gardeners for many years with very little maintenance.

Planting Instructions

When to Plant:

Plant Polygonatum rhizomes in autumn or early spring while dormant. Plant as soon as possible after receipt for the best establishment.

Where to Plant:
Choose a position in partial shade or full shade with moist, humus-rich, well-drained soil. Ideal beneath deciduous trees, shrubs or in woodland borders where the soil remains cool throughout the growing season.

How to Plant:

  • Depth: Plant rhizomes approximately 5–8 cm (2–3 inches) below the soil surface with the growing buds pointing upwards.
  • Spacing: Space plants about 30–45 cm (12–18 inches) apart.
  • Soil Prep: Incorporate plenty of compost, leaf mould or well-rotted organic matter before planting to improve moisture retention and soil fertility.

Watering:
Water thoroughly after planting and keep the soil consistently moist during the first growing season. Once established, plants tolerate short dry spells but perform best in evenly moist soil.

Aftercare Tips:

  • Apply an annual mulch of compost or leaf mould each spring.
  • Allow stems and foliage to die back naturally in autumn.
  • Divide established clumps every 4–5 years if they become overcrowded.

Top Tip:
Plant alongside Hostas, Ferns, Epimediums and Erythroniums to create a beautiful layered woodland planting that improves year after year.
