A truly distinctive tulip, Tulipa 'Cummins' is an elegant Fringed Tulip celebrated for its remarkable combination of soft lilac-purple petals and finely crystal-fringed white edges. The delicately serrated petal margins catch the sunlight beautifully, giving each flower the appearance of being dusted with frost.

Introduced in the late twentieth century, 'Cummins' remains one of the finest members of the Fringed Tulip group. Its large, goblet-shaped blooms display a sophisticated blend of lavender, mauve and soft violet tones, which gradually deepen as the flowers mature. The crisp white fringes provide a striking contrast, creating a flower of exceptional texture and refinement.

Flowering in late spring, the sturdy stems hold the blooms proudly above fresh green foliage, making 'Cummins' an excellent choice for borders, patio containers and cutting gardens. The flowers are long-lasting both outdoors and in the vase, adding elegance to floral arrangements.

Beautiful when planted alongside white tulips, deep purple Alliums, blue Camassias or silver foliage plants, 'Cummins' is equally impressive planted in generous drifts where its unique fringed flowers can be fully appreciated.

A sophisticated late-season tulip that brings texture, colour and timeless elegance to the spring garden.

Planting Instructions

When to Plant:

Plant Tulipa 'Cummins' bulbs in autumn, ideally between September and November, once the soil has cooled but before it freezes.

Where to Plant:
Choose a sunny position with fertile, well-drained soil. Fringed Tulips perform beautifully in borders, patio containers, formal bedding and cutting gardens.

How to Plant:

  • Depth: Plant bulbs approximately 15 cm (6 inches) deep.
  • Spacing: Space bulbs 10–15 cm (4–6 inches) apart.
  • Soil Prep: Improve heavy soils with grit or sharp sand to improve drainage, and enrich the soil with compost or well-rotted organic matter before planting.

Watering:
Water thoroughly after planting to settle the soil around the bulbs. During spring, rainfall is usually sufficient, although containers may require watering during prolonged dry spells.

Aftercare Tips:

  • Remove faded flowers to prevent seed production.
  • Allow the foliage to die back naturally before removing it so the bulb can store energy for the following year.
  • Avoid excessive watering once the bulbs become dormant in summer.

Top Tip:
Plant with white tulips, ornamental Alliums or silver foliage plants to highlight the beautiful frosted fringes and elegant lilac colouring.
