Graceful, elegant and deservedly one of the world's most popular tulips, Tulipa 'Menton' is a magnificent Single Late Tulip producing large, goblet-shaped flowers in glowing shades of warm rose-pink, soft apricot and delicate salmon. As the blooms mature, the colours deepen and soften, creating a beautifully luminous effect that changes throughout the flowering season.

Introduced in the 1970s, 'Menton' has become a classic garden favourite thanks to its exceptional reliability, tall, sturdy stems and outstanding weather resistance. The large blooms are carried high above fresh green foliage, bringing height and elegance to late spring borders while gently swaying in the breeze.

Flowering throughout May, 'Menton' is perfect for borders, cottage gardens, large containers and cutting gardens. Its warm pastel colouring combines beautifully with deep purple tulips, creamy whites and ornamental alliums, while the exceptionally long stems make it one of the finest tulips for cut flower arrangements.

A recipient of the prestigious Royal Horticultural Society Award of Garden Merit (AGM), Tulipa 'Menton' is a timeless variety that adds sophistication, warmth and lasting beauty to the spring garden.

Planting Instructions

When to Plant:

Plant Tulip bulbs in autumn, ideally from October to December, once the soil has cooled. Planting later in autumn helps reduce the risk of tulip diseases and encourages healthy spring flowering.

Where to Plant:
Choose a position in full sun or partial shade with fertile, well-drained soil. 'Menton' is ideal for borders, large patio containers, cutting gardens and cottage garden planting schemes.

How to Plant:

  • Depth: Plant bulbs approximately 15 cm (6 inches) deep.
  • Spacing: Space bulbs 10–15 cm (4–6 inches) apart.
  • Soil Prep: Improve heavy soils with compost and, if necessary, add horticultural grit to improve drainage.

Watering:
Water thoroughly after planting to settle the soil. Once established, tulips generally only require watering during prolonged dry spells in spring.

Aftercare Tips:

  • Remove faded flowers once blooming has finished.
  • Allow the foliage to die back naturally for at least six weeks after flowering so the bulbs can store energy for the following year.
  • Feed with a balanced fertiliser in early spring for healthy growth and abundant blooms.

Top Tip:
Plant 'Menton' alongside deep purple tulips such as 'Paul Scherer' or 'Negrita', or with ornamental Alliums for a spectacular late spring display. Its tall stems make it one of the finest tulips for cutting.
