Elegant, romantic and delightfully fragrant, Tulipa 'Foxtrot' is one of the finest Double Early Tulips, producing beautifully layered blooms in soft shades of blush pink that resemble miniature peonies or roses.

Introduced as a sport of the popular tulip 'Abba', 'Foxtrot' has become a favourite for its exquisite colouring and luxurious, fully double flowers. The blooms open from creamy-white buds flushed with pink before developing into rich shell-pink blossoms with subtle rose tones. As they mature, the flowers continue to change, creating a display that evolves beautifully throughout the flowering period.

Flowering early in the tulip season, the sturdy stems hold the large blooms well, making this variety ideal for borders, patio containers and spring bedding. The flowers are lightly fragrant and exceptionally long-lasting, both in the garden and as cut flowers, where they add elegance to spring bouquets.

Its compact habit makes 'Foxtrot' particularly suitable for smaller gardens and containers, while its soft colouring blends effortlessly with white Narcissus, Muscari and pale blue Forget-me-nots.

A truly luxurious tulip that combines the beauty of a peony with the reliability of a spring bulb.

Planting Instructions

When to Plant:

Plant Tulipa 'Foxtrot' bulbs in autumn, ideally between September and November, once the soil has cooled but before it freezes.

Where to Plant:
Choose a sunny position with fertile, well-drained soil. Double Early Tulips are perfect for borders, containers, formal bedding and cutting gardens.

How to Plant:

  • Depth: Plant bulbs approximately 15 cm (6 inches) deep.
  • Spacing: Space bulbs 10–15 cm (4–6 inches) apart.
  • Soil Prep: Improve heavy soils with grit or sharp sand to improve drainage, and incorporate compost or well-rotted organic matter before planting.

Watering:
Water thoroughly after planting to settle the soil around the bulbs. During spring, rainfall is usually sufficient, although containers may require watering during prolonged dry spells.

Aftercare Tips:

  • Remove faded flowers to prevent seed production.
  • Allow the foliage to die back naturally before removing it, enabling the bulb to store energy for the following year.
  • Avoid excessive watering once the bulbs become dormant in summer.

Top Tip:
Plant with white Narcissus, Muscari and Forget-me-nots for a beautifully romantic spring display, or grow in containers close to seating areas where the delicate fragrance can be appreciated.
