An embodiment of drama and sophistication in the spring garden. A rare and luxurious double late tulip, it boasts richly layered petals of deep maroon-black, opening into full, peony-like blooms that catch the light with a velvety sheen. Standing tall on strong stems, ‘Black Hero’ makes a striking presence in borders, containers, or cut flower arrangements where its bold silhouette and dusky allure add instant opulence. Pair it with soft pinks, silvers, or creamy whites for breathtaking contrast, or let it smoulder alone for a statement of pure elegance. As captivating as it is resilient, this tulip blooms late in the season—prolonging your spring display with moody, unforgettable beauty.

Planting Instructions

When to Plant:
Plant bulbs in autumn, from September to November, before the ground becomes too cold.

Where to Plant:
Choose a sunny, sheltered position with well-drained soil. ‘Black Hero’ pairs beautifully with paler tulips or foliage plants and thrives in borders or large containers.

How to Plant:

  • Depth: Plant bulbs 15 cm (6 inches) deep.
  • Spacing: Allow 10–12 cm (4–5 inches) between bulbs.
  • Postion: Place bulbs with the pointed tip facing upwards.

Watering:
Water thoroughly after planting to help settle the soil. Avoid overwatering, especially in containers—good drainage is essential.

Aftercare Tips:

  • Deadhead faded flowers, but leave foliage to die back naturally—this recharges the bulb for next year.
  • In containers or poor soil, feed with a balanced fertiliser as leaves emerge.
  • In wetter areas, consider lifting and storing bulbs after the foliage yellows.

Top Tip:
Plant in groups of 5 or more for bold, dramatic impact. Black Hero is excellent for cut flower arrangements, offering texture and depth to any bouquet.
