Dramatic, sophisticated and unforgettable, Tulipa 'Paul Scherer' is widely regarded as one of the darkest tulips ever introduced. Its sumptuous, satin-like petals are a rich mahogany-purple so deep they appear almost black, bringing striking contrast and elegance to the late spring garden.

Introduced in the 1980s, this exceptional Triumph Tulip has become a firm favourite with designers and gardeners alike for its rich colouring, strong stems and outstanding garden performance. The large, perfectly formed blooms retain their intense colour throughout flowering, creating a bold statement whether planted alone or paired with lighter varieties.

Flowering in mid to late spring, 'Paul Scherer' is particularly effective when combined with white tulips such as 'Maureen', soft apricot shades like 'Elegant Lady', or vibrant pinks for a dramatic colour contrast. Its long, sturdy stems also make it one of the finest tulips for cutting, adding elegance and sophistication to floral arrangements.

Ideal for borders, containers and cutting gardens, this luxurious tulip is an outstanding choice for anyone looking to add depth, richness and timeless style to their spring displays.

Planting Instructions

When to Plant:

Plant Tulip bulbs in autumn, ideally from October to December, once the soil has cooled. Planting later in autumn helps reduce the risk of tulip diseases and encourages strong spring flowering.

Where to Plant:
Choose a position in full sun or partial shade with fertile, well-drained soil. Tulips are ideal for borders, patio containers, cutting gardens and formal planting schemes.

How to Plant:

  • Depth: Plant bulbs approximately 15 cm (6 inches) deep.
  • Spacing: Space bulbs 10–15 cm (4–6 inches) apart.
  • Soil Prep: Improve heavy soils with compost and, if necessary, add horticultural grit to improve drainage.

Watering:
Water thoroughly after planting to settle the soil. Once established, tulips generally only require watering during prolonged dry spells in spring.

Aftercare Tips:

  • Deadhead faded flowers once blooming has finished.
  • Allow the foliage to die back naturally for at least six weeks after flowering so the bulbs can store energy for the following year.
  • Feed with a balanced fertiliser in early spring if growing as a perennial display.

Top Tip:
For a truly elegant display, plant 'Paul Scherer' alongside white, cream or soft apricot tulips. Its near-black blooms also create stunning contrast with fresh green foliage and silver-leaved plants.
