Exotic, dramatic and undeniably unforgettable, Tulipa 'Black Parrot' is one of the most striking tulips you can grow. Its large, deeply feathered and ruffled petals emerge in rich shades of velvety maroon before maturing to an almost black-purple, creating a spectacular display of texture and colour.

As one of the finest Parrot Tulips, 'Black Parrot' is celebrated for its extravagantly fringed petals, which twist and curl to produce an almost sculptural bloom. No two flowers are exactly alike, giving each stem its own unique character. As the flowers fully open in the sunshine, they reveal subtle highlights of burgundy and deep plum, adding further depth and interest.

Flowering in late spring, this remarkable variety makes a bold statement in borders, patio containers and cutting gardens. Its large blooms combine beautifully with silver foliage, white tulips and soft pink perennials, while the long stems make exceptional cut flowers for dramatic floral arrangements.

A true showstopper, Tulipa 'Black Parrot' is perfect for gardeners looking to add elegance, intrigue and a touch of theatrical flair to their spring displays.

Planting Instructions

When to Plant:

Plant Tulip bulbs in autumn, ideally from October to December, once the soil has cooled. Planting later in autumn helps reduce the risk of tulip diseases and encourages healthy spring flowering.

Where to Plant:
Choose a position in full sun or partial shade with fertile, well-drained soil. 'Black Parrot' is ideal for borders, patio containers and cutting gardens, where its unusual blooms can be admired up close.

How to Plant:

  • Depth: Plant bulbs approximately 15 cm (6 inches) deep.
  • Spacing: Space bulbs 10–15 cm (4–6 inches) apart.
  • Soil Prep: Improve heavy soils with compost and, if necessary, add horticultural grit to improve drainage.

Watering:
Water thoroughly after planting to settle the soil. Once established, tulips generally only require watering during prolonged dry spells in spring.

Aftercare Tips:

  • Remove faded flowers once blooming has finished.
  • Allow the foliage to die back naturally for at least six weeks after flowering so the bulbs can store energy for the following year.
  • Feed with a balanced fertiliser in early spring if growing as a perennial display.

Top Tip:
Plant 'Black Parrot' alongside white tulips or pale green-flowered varieties such as 'Spring Green' to emphasise its dramatic, almost black blooms. It also makes an outstanding cut flower for contemporary floral arrangements.
