One of the most iconic and recognisable tulips ever introduced, Tulipa 'Prinses Irene' is celebrated for its extraordinary blend of glowing orange petals dramatically flamed with rich purple. Named in honour of Princess Irene of the Netherlands in 1949, this award-winning variety has remained a favourite with gardeners for over 70 years.

Its beautifully shaped blooms combine warm tangerine and coppery-orange tones with striking violet-purple feathering on the outer petals, creating a colour combination unlike any other tulip. Many flowers are also lightly fragrant, adding another delightful feature to this much-loved variety.

As a member of the Triumph Tulip group, 'Prinses Irene' produces sturdy stems that stand well against spring weather, making it an excellent choice for borders, patio containers and cut flower arrangements. Its vibrant colouring pairs beautifully with deep purple, burgundy and soft cream tulips, creating eye-catching spring displays.

Reliable, elegant and full of character, Tulipa 'Prinses Irene' has deservedly become one of the world's best-loved tulips and was awarded the prestigious Royal Horticultural Society Award of Garden Merit (AGM) for its outstanding garden performance.

Planting Instructions

When to Plant:

Plant Tulip bulbs in autumn, ideally from October to December, once the soil has cooled. Planting later in autumn helps reduce the risk of tulip diseases and encourages strong spring flowering.

Where to Plant:
Choose a position in full sun or partial shade with fertile, well-drained soil. Tulips are ideal for borders, patio containers, cutting gardens and formal planting schemes.

How to Plant:

  • Depth: Plant bulbs approximately 15 cm (6 inches) deep.
  • Spacing: Space bulbs 10–15 cm (4–6 inches) apart.
  • Soil Prep: Improve heavy soils with compost and, if necessary, add horticultural grit to improve drainage.

Watering:
Water thoroughly after planting to settle the soil. Once established, tulips generally only require watering during prolonged dry spells in spring.

Aftercare Tips:

  • Deadhead faded flowers once blooming has finished.
  • Allow the foliage to die back naturally for at least six weeks after flowering so the bulbs can store energy for the following year.
  • Feed with a balanced fertiliser in early spring if growing as a perennial display.

Top Tip:
Plant 'Prinses Irene' with deep purple tulips or blue Muscari for a striking spring display. Its lightly fragrant flowers also make superb, long-lasting cut blooms.
