A small crocus-like bulb from the Mediterranean where it grows in sandy or rocky places. A sun lover which we would have suggested is best pot grown and brought in for the winter just to keep them drier. However, a visit to Forde Abbey this spring revealed a mass of it growing on a well-drained rockery in the garden that lies in a frost pocket - so if you have anything close to those conditions well worth consideration. Velvety flowers opening in shades of lilac and purple.

Planting Instructions

Spring flowering in purple and yellow from very fine grassy foliage. They need to be grown in the sun. A Mediterranean bulb that would not normally receive very much winter rainfall so provide them with free draining compost, either in a raised bed or in a pot planted about 1-2” (3-5cm) deep and pretty close together. Allow them to receive a dry summer rest.
