Geranium ‘Kaya’ is a real show-stopper of a hardy geranium, bringing serious colour to the garden for months on end. Its flowers are an eye-popping violet-blue to deep blue-purple—often described as electric or ultraviolet—with darker, prominent veining that makes each bloom look vividly detailed up close. It’s the kind of colour that pops from across the border and lifts everything planted nearby.

But ‘Kaya’ doesn’t stop at the flowers. The foliage is equally special: dark green leaves edged with maroon/bronze, often taking on a bronzy-purple flush in early summer, creating a dramatic contrast to the bright blooms. It forms a neat, spreading mound that’s brilliant for ground cover, filling gaps at the front of borders, weaving through cottage-garden planting, or softening the base of shrubs and roses.

Like most hardy geraniums, it’s wonderfully dependable—tough, long-lived and pollinator-friendly—and it keeps looking smart with minimal effort. Give it a quick trim after the first big flush and it will often reward you with another wave of flowers, keeping your garden colourful well into the season.

If you want a plant that’s easy to grow, hardy, and delivers a bold “wow” factor in both flowers and foliage, Geranium ‘Kaya’ is a cracking choice

Planting Instructions

When to Plant:

Plant bare roots in autumn through to early spring while dormant, avoiding periods when the ground is frozen or waterlogged.

Where to Plant:
Choose a spot in sun or partial shade with moist but well-drained soil. Hardy geraniums are adaptable and ideal for mixed borders, cottage gardens, ground cover, or underplanting shrubs. They’re especially useful for filling gaps and helping to suppress weeds once established.

How to Plant:

  • Depth: Plant so the crown sits just below soil level (around 2–3 cm).
  • Spacing: Space 30–45 cm (12–18 inches) apart depending on how quickly you want ground cover.
  • Soil Prep: Mix in a little garden compost to help hold moisture, especially in lighter soils.

Watering:
Water well after planting. Keep soil evenly moist as new growth appears. Once established, geraniums are low-maintenance and will only need watering during prolonged dry spells.

Aftercare Tips:

  • Deadhead or lightly trim after the first flush to encourage more flowers.
  • If foliage looks tired after flowering, shear back by a third—it will quickly regrow fresh leaves.
  • Mulch in spring with compost to feed the plant and conserve moisture.
  • Divide clumps every 3–5 years in spring or autumn to maintain vigour.

Top Tip:
For a longer flowering season, give Geranium ‘Kaya’ a quick tidy after its first big flush—this often triggers a fresh wave of blooms. It also pairs beautifully with Roses, Salvias, Nepeta and Alchemilla for that classic cottage-garden look.
