Rich, velvety and undeniably luxurious, Anemone coronaria 'Mistral Bordeaux' produces exceptionally large flowers in deep Bordeaux-red tones, creating a dramatic focal point in the spring garden.

Part of the premium Italian-bred Mistral Series, this outstanding variety has been selected for its oversized blooms, strong stems and prolonged flowering performance. The sumptuous petals surround a contrasting dark centre, giving each flower remarkable depth and intensity. The colour can vary subtly between deep burgundy, wine-red and rich crimson depending on light conditions, adding further interest to the display.

Flowering over many weeks from spring into early summer, 'Mistral Bordeaux' is equally at home in borders, containers and cutting gardens. Its elegant blooms are held above finely divided fern-like foliage and make exceptional cut flowers, lasting well in the vase and adding a touch of sophistication to indoor arrangements.

Combining the classic beauty of traditional florist's anemones with modern breeding improvements, 'Mistral Bordeaux' is one of the most striking and desirable varieties available today.

Planting Instructions

When to Plant:

Plant Anemone coronaria corms in autumn or spring. For best results, soak the corms in lukewarm water for 3–4 hours before planting to encourage faster establishment and stronger growth.

Where to Plant:
Choose a position in full sun or partial shade with fertile, well-drained soil. Ideal for borders, containers, cutting gardens and naturalised planting schemes.

How to Plant:

  • Depth: Plant corms approximately 5 cm (2 inches) deep.
  • Spacing: Space corms about 10 cm (4 inches) apart.
  • Soil Prep: Incorporate compost or organic matter before planting. Improve heavy soils with grit to aid drainage.

Watering:
Water thoroughly after planting and keep the soil lightly moist while growth is developing. Avoid waterlogged conditions.

Aftercare Tips:

  • Deadhead spent flowers regularly to encourage further blooms.
  • Allow foliage to die back naturally after flowering.
  • Apply a winter mulch in colder areas for additional protection.

Top Tip:
Plant alongside white-flowered varieties such as 'Bride' or 'Mount Everest' for a striking contrast that really highlights the rich Bordeaux colouring.
