Galanthus elwesii Mount Everest

Majestic in both name and appearance, Galanthus elwesii 'Mount Everest' is one of the largest and most impressive snowdrops you can grow. This superb selection of the Greater Snowdrop produces elegant, pure white flowers held above broad, blue-grey foliage, creating a striking display just as winter begins to loosen its grip.

Named after the world's highest mountain, 'Mount Everest' lives up to its reputation with unusually large blooms and a strong, upright habit. On bright days, the broad outer petals open almost horizontally, revealing the distinctive inner petals marked with a neat green, horseshoe-shaped marking, giving each flower exceptional elegance and character.

Flowering slightly later than many snowdrops, this robust variety extends the snowdrop season into early spring and provides an invaluable source of nectar for early bees and other pollinating insects. Its broad grey-green foliage is equally attractive, making it one of the most handsome Galanthus elwesii cultivars available.

Planting Instructions

When to Plant:

Plant Galanthus bulbs in autumn (September–November), or plant "in the green" immediately after flowering for the quickest establishment.

Where to Plant:
Choose a position in partial shade or dappled woodland shade with moist but well-drained, humus-rich soil. Ideal beneath deciduous trees, woodland gardens, shady borders and naturalised lawns.

How to Plant:

• Depth: Plant bulbs approximately 8–10 cm (3–4 inches) deep.
• Spacing: Space bulbs approximately 8–10 cm (3–4 inches) apart.
• Soil Prep: Improve poor soils with leaf mould, compost or well-rotted organic matter to retain moisture while maintaining good drainage.

Watering:
Water after planting if the soil is dry. Once established, rainfall is normally sufficient, although snowdrops appreciate moist soil during active growth.

Aftercare Tips:

• Allow foliage to die back naturally after flowering to feed the bulbs for next year.
• Lift and divide overcrowded clumps every 4–5 years after flowering if required.
• Apply a mulch of compost or leaf mould each autumn to encourage healthy growth.

Top Tip:
Plant in generous drifts beneath deciduous trees where the large white flowers and broad grey-green leaves can create an impressive woodland display that becomes better every year.
