Exquisitely elegant and beautifully fragrant, Narcissus 'Obdam' is widely regarded as one of the finest double white daffodils ever introduced. Its sumptuous, fully double blooms resemble luxurious gardenias or peonies, bringing timeless sophistication to the spring garden.

Introduced in the Netherlands in the 1940s, 'Obdam' has become a classic favourite for its exceptionally large, richly layered flowers. Opening from creamy buds, the blooms unfurl into a mass of pristine white petals surrounding a softly ruffled, creamy-white centre, occasionally touched with the palest hint of primrose as the flowers first open. The large blooms are lightly fragrant and held on strong stems, making them superb for both garden display and cut flower arrangements.

Flowering from April into May, 'Obdam' is ideal for borders, cottage gardens, cutting gardens and patio containers. Its elegant white flowers bring light to spring planting schemes and combine beautifully with blue Muscari, Camassias, tulips and forget-me-nots, creating fresh, classic combinations that never go out of style.

Recipient of the prestigious RHS Award of Garden Merit, this dependable variety returns year after year, gradually forming larger clumps that become increasingly spectacular with age.

A magnificent double daffodil whose luxurious white blooms bring fragrance, elegance and lasting beauty to every spring garden.

Planting Instructions

When to Plant:

Plant Narcissus bulbs in autumn, ideally between September and November, while the soil remains warm enough for strong root development before winter.

Where to Plant:
Choose a position in full sun or partial shade with fertile, well-drained soil. 'Obdam' is ideal for borders, cottage gardens, cutting gardens and patio containers.

How to Plant:

  • Depth: Plant bulbs approximately 10–15 cm (4–6 inches) deep.
  • Spacing: Space bulbs about 10–15 cm (4–6 inches) apart.
  • Soil Prep: Improve heavy soils with compost and grit if required to ensure good drainage.

Watering:
Water thoroughly after planting to settle the soil. Once established, daffodils generally require little additional watering except during prolonged dry periods.

Aftercare Tips:

  • Deadhead faded flowers to prevent seed production.
  • Allow the foliage to die back naturally for at least six weeks after flowering.
  • Feed with a balanced fertiliser after flowering to encourage healthy bulbs and abundant blooms the following spring.

Top Tip:
Plant 'Obdam' where its exquisite double flowers and delicate fragrance can be enjoyed up close. It also makes an exceptional cut flower, bringing a touch of elegance indoors.
