A true classic among fragrant daffodils, Narcissus 'Sweetness' is cherished for its abundant, sunshine-yellow flowers and wonderfully rich perfume. Flowering later than many daffodils, this elegant Jonquilla hybrid extends the spring season with graceful blooms that fill both the garden and the home with their delightful scent.

Introduced in the early 20th century, 'Sweetness' has remained a favourite for generations thanks to its exceptional reliability and free-flowering nature. Each slender stem carries one to three beautifully scented flowers, with broad golden-yellow petals surrounding a neatly flared trumpet in a slightly deeper golden hue. The flowers are held above fine, rush-like foliage, giving the plant an airy, graceful appearance that moves gently in the spring breeze.

Flowering from April into May, 'Sweetness' is ideal for borders, gravel gardens, containers and naturalised drifts. The nectar-rich blooms are highly attractive to bees and other pollinating insects, while their long-lasting stems make superb cut flowers, bringing their unmistakable fragrance indoors.

Recipient of the prestigious RHS Award of Garden Merit, 'Sweetness' combines beautifully with Camassias, late tulips, Alliums and Muscari, adding colour, fragrance and elegance to the late spring garden.

A timeless Jonquilla daffodil whose sweet perfume and cheerful golden blooms make it one of the finest fragrant narcissi available.

Planting Instructions

When to Plant:

Plant Narcissus bulbs in autumn, from September to November, while the soil remains warm enough for strong root development before winter.

Where to Plant:
Choose a position in full sun or partial shade with fertile, well-drained soil. 'Sweetness' is perfect for borders, gravel gardens, cottage gardens, containers and naturalising beneath deciduous trees.

How to Plant:

  • Depth: Plant bulbs approximately 10–15 cm (4–6 inches) deep.
  • Spacing: Space bulbs about 10–15 cm (4–6 inches) apart.
  • Soil Prep: Improve heavy soils with compost and grit if necessary to ensure good drainage.

Watering:
Water thoroughly after planting to settle the soil. Once established, bulbs require very little watering except during prolonged dry spells.

Aftercare Tips:

  • Deadhead faded flowers to prevent seed production.
  • Allow the foliage to die back naturally for at least six weeks after flowering.
  • Feed with a balanced fertiliser after flowering to encourage healthy bulbs and reliable blooms the following spring.

Top Tip:
Plant near paths, patios or entrances where the wonderfully sweet fragrance can be enjoyed. The long-lasting blooms are also superb for cutting and filling the home with their perfume.
