Radiant, robust and one of the earliest large-flowered tulips to bloom, Tulipa 'Orange Emperor' is a magnificent Fosteriana Tulip, producing enormous goblet-shaped flowers in glowing shades of rich orange flushed with warm golden-yellow.

A sport of the famous 'Red Emperor' (Madame Lefeber), this outstanding variety inherits all the vigour and reliability of the Fosteriana group while offering a softer, sunlit colour palette. The impressive blooms open wide in bright sunshine to reveal luminous golden centres, creating a dazzling display that lights up the spring garden.

Flowering in early to mid-spring, 'Orange Emperor' stands on strong, sturdy stems that cope well with spring weather, making it an excellent choice for borders, large containers and mass planting. Its broad grey-green foliage provides an attractive backdrop to the vibrant flowers, while the long-lasting blooms make superb cut flowers for spring arrangements.

Fosteriana tulips are renowned for their longevity and are among the most reliable tulips for returning year after year in well-drained soil. 'Orange Emperor' combines beautifully with blue Muscari, white Narcissus and early flowering perennials, creating striking combinations that celebrate the arrival of spring.

A bold, cheerful tulip that brings warmth, colour and exceptional garden performance.

Planting Instructions

When to Plant:

Plant Tulipa 'Orange Emperor' bulbs in autumn, ideally between September and November, once the soil has cooled but before it freezes.

Where to Plant:
Choose a sunny position with fertile, well-drained soil. Fosteriana Tulips are ideal for borders, large containers, formal bedding and naturalistic drifts.

How to Plant:

  • Depth: Plant bulbs approximately 15 cm (6 inches) deep.
  • Spacing: Space bulbs 10–15 cm (4–6 inches) apart.
  • Soil Prep: Improve heavy soils with grit or sharp sand to improve drainage, and incorporate compost or well-rotted organic matter before planting.

Watering:
Water thoroughly after planting to settle the soil around the bulbs. During spring, rainfall is usually sufficient, although containers may require occasional watering during prolonged dry spells.

Aftercare Tips:

  • Remove faded flowers to prevent seed production.
  • Allow the foliage to die back naturally before removing it so the bulbs can store energy for the following year.
  • Leave bulbs undisturbed wherever possible, as Fosteriana tulips often return reliably for many seasons.

Top Tip:
Plant with blue Muscari, white Narcissus or purple Hyacinths for a vibrant spring display that makes the glowing orange flowers truly stand out.
