A rare and radiant beauty, its name meaning “dawn” in Japanese — a fitting tribute to its soft, golden blooms brushed with hints of rose and cream. Each petal is delicately feathered and subtly flamed, opening wide in spring sunlight to reveal a warm, luminous heart. As a Darwin Hybrid, 'Akebono' is not only striking in form but also strong and resilient, returning year after year with dependable blooms and sturdy stems that hold their heads high, even in windy gardens.

Perfect for planting in borders, mixed spring displays, or elegant containers, 'Akebono' brings a gentle glow to the garden — a tulip that seems to carry the first light of morning in every flower. Harmonise it with soft pinks or ivory whites for a serene palette, or let it shine alone in swathes for maximum impact. A true favourite among designers and collectors alike.

Planting Instructions

When to Plant:

Plant in autumn, from September to November, while the soil is still workable and before the first frost.

Where to Plant:
Choose a sunny and sheltered position with well-drained soil. Ideal for beds, borders, and pots—especially where you can admire its full, layered blooms up close.

How to Plant:

  • Depth: Plant bulbs 15 cm (6 inches) deep.
  • Spacing: Allow 10–12 cm (4–5 inches) between bulbs.
  • Postion: Set bulbs with the pointed tip facing upwards.

Watering:
Water after planting to help settle the soil. In containers, check occasionally during dry spells, but avoid overwatering.

Aftercare Tips:

  • Remove spent flowers, but let foliage die back naturally to feed the bulb for next season.
  • For pots or poor soil, apply a balanced fertiliser in spring as leaves emerge.
  • In heavy or wet soils, lift and store bulbs after flowering to prevent rot.

Top Tip:
Tulipa ‘Akebono’ makes an excellent cut flower, so plant extra to enjoy indoors. For maximum impact outdoors, plant in groups or clusters to showcase its richly textured blooms.
