Planting Instructions

When to Plant:

Plant Tulip bulbs in autumn, from September to December, once the soil has started to cool. Planting later in autumn can help reduce the risk of tulip diseases such as Tulip Fire.

Where to Plant:
Choose a position in full sun with fertile, well-drained soil. Tulips thrive in borders, containers and cutting gardens but dislike sitting in wet soil during winter.

How to Plant:

• Depth: Plant bulbs approximately 15 cm (6 inches) deep.
• Spacing: Space bulbs about 10–15 cm (4–6 inches) apart.
• Soil Prep: Improve soil with garden compost. In heavy soils, add grit or sharp sand to improve drainage.

Watering:
Water well after planting to settle the soil around the bulbs. Once established, tulips usually require little additional watering except during prolonged dry spells in spring.

Aftercare Tips:

• Remove faded flowers to prevent seed production.
• Allow foliage to die back naturally for at least six weeks after flowering to feed the bulb for the following year.
• A light spring feed with a balanced fertiliser will encourage healthy growth and flowering.

Top Tip:
Plant 'Ballerina' alongside deep purple tulips such as 'Queen of Night' or underplant with blue Muscari for a spectacular late spring colour combination.
