Elegant, refined and beautifully understated, Tulipa 'City of Vancouver' is a graceful Single Late Tulip producing large, perfectly formed cup-shaped flowers that open with a delicate primrose-yellow flush before gradually maturing to a soft ivory-white. This gentle colour transformation gives the blooms a luminous quality that brightens the late spring garden.

Flowering from mid-April into May, this sophisticated variety stands proudly on strong stems reaching around 50cm, making it an excellent choice for borders, patio containers and cutting gardens. Its clean, timeless colouring blends effortlessly with almost every planting scheme, complementing deep purples, soft pinks, rich burgundies and fresh spring greens.

As a Single Late Tulip, 'City of Vancouver' offers elegant form, impressive weather resistance and outstanding performance in the garden. The long-lasting flowers are particularly valued by florists, remaining fresh in the vase for many days and bringing effortless elegance indoors.

Whether planted in sweeping drifts or incorporated into mixed borders, Tulipa 'City of Vancouver' delivers a sophisticated finale to the tulip season.

Planting Instructions

When to Plant:

Plant Tulip bulbs in autumn, ideally from October to December, once the soil has cooled. Planting later in autumn helps reduce the risk of tulip diseases and encourages healthy spring flowering.

Where to Plant:
Choose a position in full sun or partial shade with fertile, well-drained soil. 'City of Vancouver' is ideal for borders, patio containers, cutting gardens and formal planting schemes.

How to Plant:

  • Depth: Plant bulbs approximately 15 cm (6 inches) deep.
  • Spacing: Space bulbs 10–15 cm (4–6 inches) apart.
  • Soil Prep: Improve heavy soils with compost and, if necessary, add horticultural grit to improve drainage.

Watering:
Water thoroughly after planting to settle the soil. Once established, tulips generally only require watering during prolonged dry spells in spring.

Aftercare Tips:

  • Remove faded flowers once blooming has finished.
  • Allow the foliage to die back naturally for at least six weeks after flowering so the bulbs can store energy for the following year.
  • Feed with a balanced fertiliser in early spring for healthy growth and abundant blooms.

Top Tip:
Plant 'City of Vancouver' alongside deep purple tulips such as 'Paul Scherer' or soft apricot varieties like 'Elegant Lady' for a beautifully sophisticated late spring display. Its long stems also make outstanding cut flowers.
