Small in stature but spectacular in flower, Tulipa 'Little Beauty' is one of the most enchanting Species Tulips, producing vibrant, star-shaped blooms in rich rosy-pink to magenta with a striking sapphire-blue heart, surrounding a cluster of golden-yellow stamens. Few spring bulbs offer such an extraordinary combination of colour in such a compact plant.

Native to the mountainous regions of Central Asia, 'Little Beauty' is perfectly adapted to sunny, well-drained conditions and is highly prized for its ability to naturalise, returning year after year with increasing vigour. On bright spring days, the flowers open wide to reveal their dazzling blue centre, while in the evening they gently close into elegant, pointed buds.

Growing to just 10–15cm, this delightful miniature tulip is ideal for rockeries, alpine gardens, gravel gardens, containers, raised beds and the front of sunny borders. Its narrow grey-green foliage forms neat clumps, allowing the brilliant flowers to take centre stage.

Recipient of the prestigious Royal Horticultural Society Award of Garden Merit (AGM), Tulipa 'Little Beauty' is celebrated for its outstanding garden performance, reliability and exceptional beauty.

Perfect for gardeners who appreciate botanical treasures, this miniature tulip proves that the smallest flowers often make the biggest impression.

Planting Instructions

When to Plant:

Plant Tulipa 'Little Beauty' bulbs in autumn, ideally from October to December, while the soil remains workable and before it freezes.

Where to Plant:
Choose a sunny position with free-draining soil. 'Little Beauty' is perfect for rockeries, alpine gardens, gravel gardens, raised beds, patio containers and the front of sunny borders. It thrives in locations that remain relatively dry during summer.

How to Plant:

  • Depth: Plant bulbs approximately 8–10 cm (3–4 inches) deep.
  • Spacing: Space bulbs 8–10 cm (3–4 inches) apart.
  • Soil Prep: Improve heavy soils by incorporating horticultural grit to ensure excellent drainage. Avoid planting where water collects during winter.

Watering:
Water thoroughly after planting to settle the soil. Once established, this species tulip requires very little additional watering and prefers relatively dry conditions outside the growing season.

Aftercare Tips:

  • Remove faded flowers if seed is not required.
  • Allow the foliage to die back naturally so the bulbs can store energy for the following spring.
  • Leave bulbs undisturbed wherever possible, as they naturalise well and often flower more freely each year.

Top Tip:
Plant 'Little Beauty' in generous drifts among gravel or low-growing alpine plants where its dazzling blue centres can be admired up close. It is particularly effective in shallow bowls and alpine troughs.
