A true masterpiece of spring, Tulipa 'Groenland' is one of the finest Viridiflora Tulips, admired for its exquisite blend of soft blush-pink petals dramatically brushed with vibrant emerald-green flames. Elegant, refined and wonderfully long-lasting, each flower appears almost hand-painted, making this award-winning variety a standout feature in any late spring garden.

The large, goblet-shaped blooms open in delicate shades of silvery pink and ivory, with the distinctive green midrib remaining crisp throughout the flowering period—a hallmark of the Viridiflora group. As the flowers mature, the pink tones intensify while the green markings become even more pronounced, creating a display that remains fresh and vibrant for weeks.

Flowering in May, 'Groenland' grows to around 45–55cm tall on sturdy stems that withstand wind and rain exceptionally well. Its sophisticated colouring blends effortlessly with deep purple tulips such as 'Queen of Night', creamy whites, ornamental Alliums and soft blue Camassias, making it a favourite for elegant planting schemes.

A recipient of the prestigious Royal Horticultural Society Award of Garden Merit (AGM), Tulipa 'Groenland' is also renowned for its exceptionally long-lasting flowers, both in the garden and as a superb cut flower.

Elegant, distinctive and timelessly beautiful, this is one of the very best Viridiflora tulips for adding sophistication and lasting colour to the late spring garden.

Planting Instructions

When to Plant:

Plant Tulip bulbs in autumn, ideally from October to December, once the soil has cooled. Planting later in autumn helps reduce the risk of tulip diseases and encourages healthy spring flowering.

Where to Plant:
Choose a position in full sun or partial shade with fertile, well-drained soil. 'Groenland' is ideal for borders, patio containers, cutting gardens and elegant mixed planting schemes.

How to Plant:

  • Depth: Plant bulbs approximately 15 cm (6 inches) deep.
  • Spacing: Space bulbs 10–15 cm (4–6 inches) apart.
  • Soil Prep: Improve heavy soils with compost and, if necessary, add horticultural grit to improve drainage.

Watering:
Water thoroughly after planting to settle the soil. Once established, tulips generally only require watering during prolonged dry spells in spring.

Aftercare Tips:

  • Remove faded flowers once blooming has finished.
  • Allow the foliage to die back naturally for at least six weeks after flowering so the bulbs can replenish their energy for the following year.
  • Feed with a balanced fertiliser in early spring to encourage strong stems and abundant blooms.

Top Tip:
Plant 'Groenland' alongside dark tulips such as 'Queen of Night', white tulips or ornamental Alliums to emphasise its striking green flames. Its exceptionally long-lasting blooms also make outstanding cut flowers.
