Dichelostemma ida maia has spectacular red, yellow and green coloured flowers, shaped like cigars, opening at the tip of a wiry stem. Named after the daughter of a Californian stage coach-driver and pollinated in the wild by humming-birds. The flowers last a long time, both in the garden and cut, and enjoy the summer heat held amidst the long grassy leaves.
Dichelostemma ida maia bulbs should be planted about 10 bulbs per square foot 3-4" (8-10cm) deep and 2-3" (5-8cm) apart, in a sunny, sheltered site, on well drained soil and need a dormant season for the bulb to ripen. Grown much as any allium
