Bright, cheerful and wonderfully distinctive, Narcissus 'Slice of Life' is a striking Split-Corona Daffodil (RHS Division 11a) that brings a fresh, contemporary look to the spring garden. Its beautifully open flowers resemble delicate butterflies, making this variety a real conversation piece in borders, containers and spring displays.

Each large bloom features broad creamy-white to soft ivory petals surrounding a spectacular golden-yellow split corona. The trumpet is divided into six segments which spread across the petals, creating a beautifully layered flower with the appearance of a radiant sunburst or butterfly in flight. As the blooms mature, the yellow centre softens slightly, adding further depth and elegance.

Flowering in mid to late spring, 'Slice of Life' produces sturdy, weather-resistant flowers with a light, sweet fragrance. Its unusual form makes it particularly effective planted alongside traditional daffodils, tulips and Muscari, where it provides both contrast and texture. The long-lasting blooms are also excellent for cutting and make eye-catching additions to spring arrangements.

Easy to grow and exceptionally reliable, this hardy perennial returns year after year, gradually increasing into generous clumps that become more impressive with every season.

A beautiful butterfly daffodil that combines vibrant colour, graceful form and dependable garden performance.

Planting Instructions

When to Plant:

Plant Narcissus bulbs in autumn, ideally between September and November, before the ground freezes and while the soil remains workable.

Where to Plant:
Choose a position in full sun or partial shade with fertile, well-drained soil. Butterfly daffodils thrive in borders, containers, cottage gardens and naturalised areas beneath deciduous trees.

How to Plant:

  • Depth: Plant bulbs approximately 10–15 cm (4–6 inches) deep.
  • Spacing: Space bulbs about 10–15 cm (4–6 inches) apart.
  • Soil Prep: Improve poor soils with compost or well-rotted organic matter. In heavy clay soils, incorporate grit to improve drainage.

Watering:
Water thoroughly after planting to settle the soil. Once established, water only during prolonged dry spells in spring.

Aftercare Tips:

  • Allow foliage to die back naturally for at least six weeks after flowering.
  • Remove spent flower heads to prevent seed production.
  • Feed with a balanced fertiliser after flowering to encourage strong bulbs for the following year.

Top Tip:
Plant with blue Muscari, purple Tulips or white Hyacinths to showcase the vibrant yellow butterfly-shaped centre and create a stunning late spring display.
