Elegant, graceful and wonderfully free-flowering, Tulipa turkestanica is one of the earliest and most rewarding species tulips. Unlike many tulips that produce a single bloom, each bulb sends up several slender stems carrying clusters of delicate, star-shaped flowers, creating a spectacular natural display.

Native to the mountains of Central Asia, this charming botanical tulip bears creamy-white petals, delicately flushed with soft green on the outside and surrounding warm golden-yellow centres. As the spring sunshine appears, the flowers open wide into brilliant stars before gently closing again in the evening, adding movement and interest to the garden.

Awarded the prestigious Royal Horticultural Society Award of Garden Merit (AGM), Tulipa turkestanica is exceptionally reliable and readily naturalises in well-drained soils. It is perfect for rockeries, gravel gardens, alpine beds, containers and the front of sunny borders, where its graceful habit and multiple blooms can be fully appreciated.

The nectar-rich flowers are also highly attractive to bees and other early pollinating insects, making this delightful species tulip an excellent choice for wildlife-friendly gardens.

Easy to grow and returning reliably year after year, Tulipa turkestanica is a beautiful reminder of the wild origins of today's garden tulips.

Planting Instructions

When to Plant:

Plant Tulipa turkestanica bulbs in autumn (September–December) while the soil is cool and workable. Autumn planting allows the bulbs to establish strong roots before flowering in spring.

Where to Plant:
Choose a sunny position with well-drained soil. Tulipa turkestanica is ideal for rockeries, alpine gardens, gravel gardens, containers and the front of borders. Avoid areas where water collects during winter.

How to Plant:

  • Depth: Plant bulbs approximately 8–10 cm (3–4 inches) deep.
  • Spacing: Space bulbs about 8–10 cm (3–4 inches) apart.
  • Soil Prep: Improve heavy soils by adding horticultural grit or sharp sand to ensure excellent drainage.

Watering:
Water well after planting to settle the soil. Once established, Tulipa turkestanica requires very little additional watering except during prolonged dry spells.

Aftercare Tips:

  • Remove faded flowers if desired, but allow the foliage to die back naturally.
  • Do not cut back green leaves, as they help the bulb store energy for the following year's flowers.
  • Leave bulbs undisturbed to naturalise and produce increasing numbers of flowers each spring.

Top Tip:
Each bulb can produce several flowers, so plant in generous drifts to create a beautiful carpet of creamy-white stars with golden centres that return year after year.
