Bold, dramatic and instantly recognisable, Tulipa 'Davenport' is one of the finest Fringed Tulips, producing rich crimson-red flowers spectacularly edged with broad golden-yellow fringes. The striking contrast between the velvety petals and the crystal-like fringed edges creates one of the most eye-catching tulips of the late spring season.

Each large goblet-shaped bloom opens from elegant buds into a luxurious flower of deep ruby-red, while the heavily fringed golden margins appear almost as though they have been dusted with sparkling sugar. As the flowers mature, the rich colours become even more intense, creating an unforgettable display full of texture, warmth and sophistication.

Flowering in late spring, 'Davenport' stands on strong, upright stems that perform exceptionally well in borders, patio containers and cutting gardens. Its robust habit and long-lasting blooms also make it an outstanding cut flower, bringing vibrant colour and unusual texture to indoor arrangements.

Winner of the Royal Horticultural Society's Award of Garden Merit, 'Davenport' combines beautifully with yellow tulips, deep purple Alliums, blue Camassias and white Narcissi, creating spectacular spring combinations that are full of contrast and drama.

A truly magnificent fringed tulip that brings richness, elegance and exceptional garden performance to every spring display.

Planting Instructions

When to Plant:

Plant Tulipa 'Davenport' bulbs in autumn, ideally between September and November, once the soil has cooled but before it freezes.

Where to Plant:
Choose a sunny position with fertile, well-drained soil. Fringed Tulips are ideal for borders, patio containers, formal bedding and cutting gardens.

How to Plant:

  • Depth: Plant bulbs approximately 15 cm (6 inches) deep.
  • Spacing: Space bulbs 10–15 cm (4–6 inches) apart.
  • Soil Prep: Improve heavy soils with grit or sharp sand to improve drainage, and incorporate compost or well-rotted organic matter before planting.

Watering:
Water thoroughly after planting to settle the soil around the bulbs. During spring, rainfall is usually sufficient, although containers may require watering during prolonged dry spells.

Aftercare Tips:

  • Remove faded flowers to prevent seed production.
  • Allow the foliage to die back naturally before removing it so the bulb can store energy for the following year.
  • Avoid excessive watering once the bulbs become dormant in summer.

Top Tip:
Plant alongside golden Narcissi, purple Alliums or blue Camassias to create spectacular colour contrasts that highlight the brilliant golden fringes.
