Bright, cheerful and wonderfully reliable, Tulipa 'Toronto' is one of the finest Multi-flowering (Multi-headed) Tulips, producing an impressive bouquet of vibrant coral-red to warm salmon-pink flowers from a single bulb. Unlike traditional tulips, each stem carries three to five blooms, creating a fuller, longer-lasting display that brings exceptional value and colour to the spring garden.

A member of the Greigii Tulip group, 'Toronto' is equally admired for its attractive foliage. The broad grey-green leaves are beautifully mottled with rich maroon-purple markings, providing ornamental interest long before the flowers appear.

Flowering in April, the vivid blooms open wide in sunshine to reveal warm golden centres, attracting early pollinating insects while creating a lively splash of colour in borders, rockeries and containers. Growing to a compact 30–40cm, 'Toronto' is ideal for the front of borders, patio pots, gravel gardens and naturalistic planting schemes.

Winner of the prestigious Royal Horticultural Society Award of Garden Merit (AGM), Tulipa 'Toronto' is renowned for its outstanding garden performance, reliability and ability to return well in favourable conditions.

Compact, colourful and exceptionally floriferous, 'Toronto' is one of the best tulips for creating maximum impact from every bulb.

Planting Instructions

When to Plant:

Plant Tulip bulbs in autumn, ideally from October to December, once the soil has cooled. Planting later in autumn helps reduce the risk of tulip diseases and encourages healthy spring flowering.

Where to Plant:
Choose a position in full sun or partial shade with fertile, well-drained soil. 'Toronto' is perfect for borders, patio containers, rockeries, gravel gardens and naturalistic planting.

How to Plant:

  • Depth: Plant bulbs approximately 12–15 cm (5–6 inches) deep.
  • Spacing: Space bulbs 10–12 cm (4–5 inches) apart.
  • Soil Prep: Improve heavy soils with compost and, if necessary, incorporate horticultural grit to improve drainage.

Watering:
Water thoroughly after planting to settle the soil. Once established, tulips generally require very little watering except during prolonged dry periods in spring.

Aftercare Tips:

  • Remove faded flowers once blooming has finished, leaving the attractive foliage intact.
  • Allow the leaves to die back naturally for at least six weeks after flowering so the bulbs can store energy for the following spring.
  • Feed with a balanced fertiliser in early spring to encourage vigorous growth and abundant flowering.

Top Tip:
Plant 'Toronto' in generous groups where its multiple flowers per stem and beautifully mottled foliage can be fully appreciated. It combines wonderfully with blue Muscari, white Narcissus and other Greigii tulips for a colourful spring display.
