Delightfully dainty and full of charm, Narcissus 'Topolino' is a beautiful Miniature Trumpet Daffodil (RHS Division 1) that brings elegant simplicity to the early spring garden. Its compact size, refined colouring and reliable flowering make it an excellent choice for rockeries, containers and the front of borders.

Each perfectly proportioned bloom features broad creamy-white to ivory petals surrounding a slender soft primrose-yellow trumpet. As the flowers mature, the trumpet gradually fades to creamy white, creating a subtle two-tone effect before the blooms become almost entirely white. This gentle colour transition gives established clumps a beautifully natural appearance.

Flowering in early to mid-spring, 'Topolino' produces lightly fragrant flowers on sturdy stems despite its compact stature. It is particularly effective planted in generous drifts, where its elegant blooms create a carpet of soft spring colour. Its petite habit also makes it ideal for alpine gardens, raised beds and naturalising through short grass.

Easy to grow and exceptionally reliable, 'Topolino' returns faithfully each year and gradually increases into attractive clumps with very little maintenance. It combines beautifully with species crocuses, dwarf iris, Muscari and other miniature spring bulbs.

A charming little daffodil that offers classic trumpet elegance in a perfectly compact form.

Planting Instructions

When to Plant:

Plant Narcissus bulbs in autumn, ideally between September and November, before the ground freezes and while the soil remains workable.

Where to Plant:
Choose a position in full sun or partial shade with fertile, well-drained soil. 'Topolino' is ideal for rockeries, alpine gardens, containers, borders and naturalising in short grass.

How to Plant:

  • Depth: Plant bulbs approximately 8–10 cm (3–4 inches) deep.
  • Spacing: Space bulbs about 8–10 cm (3–4 inches) apart.
  • Soil Prep: Improve poor soils with compost or well-rotted organic matter. Add grit to heavy soils to improve drainage.

Watering:
Water thoroughly after planting to settle the soil. Once established, only water during prolonged dry spells in spring.

Aftercare Tips:

  • Allow the foliage to die back naturally for at least six weeks after flowering.
  • Remove spent flower heads if seed is not required.
  • Leave bulbs undisturbed to naturalise and gradually form larger clumps.

Top Tip:
Plant in groups amongst species Crocus, miniature Iris reticulata and Muscari for a charming early spring display full of delicate colour and texture.
