A true classic of the spring garden, Tulipa 'Purissima', also known as White Emperor, is one of the finest Fosteriana Tulips, producing magnificent, silky white goblet-shaped flowers that are lightly flushed with creamy primrose as they first emerge.
Introduced in the 1940s, this award-winning variety has become one of the most widely admired Fosteriana tulips thanks to its exceptional vigour, enormous flowers and remarkable reliability. The elegant blooms gradually open wide in sunshine to reveal buttery-yellow centres before fading to a luminous pure white, creating a display of timeless beauty.
Flowering in early to mid-spring, 'Purissima' is among the first of the large tulips to bloom, bridging the gap between early bulbs and the main tulip season. The sturdy stems and broad grey-green foliage stand up well to spring weather, making it equally valuable in borders, large containers and cutting gardens.
Unlike many modern tulips, Fosteriana varieties are renowned for their ability to return year after year when grown in well-drained soil. 'Purissima' combines beautifully with blue Muscari, pale pink Hyacinths, white Narcissi and flowering forget-me-nots, while its elegant flowers make exceptional cut blooms that last well in the vase.
Recipient of the Royal Horticultural Society's Award of Garden Merit, this outstanding tulip remains one of the finest white tulips ever introduced.
A timeless favourite that combines elegance, reliability and outstanding garden performance.
