Tulipa Portland

Compact, colourful and full of early spring charm, Tulipa 'Portland' is a superb Greigii Tulip, producing large, bowl-shaped flowers in rich shades of rosy pink and deep purple-red. The striking bi-coloured blooms are perfectly complemented by its beautifully maroon-mottled foliage, making this variety attractive long before the flowers appear.

Greigii tulips are among the oldest cultivated botanical tulips and are highly prized for their large flowers, compact habit and wonderfully decorative leaves. 'Portland' is no exception, producing flowers that open wide in sunshine to reveal their vibrant colouring while standing proudly above boldly striped foliage that remains ornamental throughout the flowering season.

Flowering in early spring, this compact variety is ideal for the front of borders, rockeries, patio containers and alpine gardens. Its shorter stems make it particularly resistant to wind and rain, while its vivid blooms provide an important early source of colour just as the garden begins to awaken.

Like many Greigii tulips, 'Portland' is more likely than many hybrid tulips to return year after year when planted in a sunny, well-drained position. It combines beautifully with Muscari, Crocuses, dwarf Narcissi and other early spring bulbs.

Planting Instructions

When to Plant:

Plant Tulipa 'Portland' bulbs in autumn, ideally between September and November, before the ground freezes.

Where to Plant:
Choose a position in full sun or partial shade with fertile, well-drained soil. Greigii Tulips are ideal for rock gardens, borders, containers, gravel gardens and the front of flower beds.

How to Plant:

• Depth: Plant bulbs approximately 8–10 cm (3–4 inches) deep.
• Spacing: Space bulbs about 15 cm (6 inches) apart.
• Soil Prep: Improve heavy soils with grit or sharp sand to improve drainage, and incorporate compost or well-rotted organic matter before planting.

Watering:
Water thoroughly after planting to settle the soil around the bulbs. During spring, rainfall is usually sufficient, although containers may require watering during prolonged dry spells.

Aftercare Tips:

• Remove faded flowers once blooming has finished.
• Allow the attractive foliage to die back naturally so the bulb can replenish its energy for the following year.
• Keep bulbs relatively dry during summer dormancy for the best chance of reliable repeat flowering.

Top Tip:
Plant in small groups at the front of borders or in patio pots where both the beautifully maroon-mottled foliage and vibrant flowers can be enjoyed throughout the season.
